Since last Friday there has been a countdown on the Threads website when accessed from European lands. And that countdown expires next December 14.
There is already a date for the launch in the old continent of Threads, the particular Twitter clone of Meta. And in no time at all, European users will be able to sink their teeth into the social network of the group led by Mark Zuckerberg. Since last Friday there is a countdown on the Threads website when accessing them from European lands. And that countdown expires next December 14, which is when Threads will foreseeably debut in Europe.
Meta excluded the European Union from the global launch of Threads last July. The company led by Mark Zuckerberg justified this exclusion on the grounds of uncertainties of a legal nature in relation to the rules currently in force on European territory, in particular the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) and Digital Markets Act (DMA). The transfer of the user’s personal data from Instagram to Threads and the fact that the accounts on both social networks were linked could have put Meta in severe trouble (and ultimately resulted in heavy penalties).
Despite the countdown on the Threads website, the truth is that Meta has not yet officially confirmed the landing of the social network in Europe. It is also unclear whether Threads will have different functions in Europe than those currently available in other markets.
Threads aims to capture the attention of X users dissatisfied with the drift of the social network.
The Wall Street Journal published a few days ago that, in view of the regulations in force in the EU, there would be in Europe the option to use Threads only and exclusively to read posts from third parties (and without the ability to publish their own content).
Since Elon Musk acquired Twitter more than a year ago and subsequently renamed the social network as X, users of the social network have suffered a remarkable prolapse, according to different market research companies. And the social network of the little bird has seen multiple rivals emerge over the course of the last year to try to attract to its ranks users dissatisfied with the drift of Twitter (now X). Threads is one of the most powerful alternatives to X, as it anchors itself to Instagram, which already has hundreds of millions of users.
Threads would currently have nearly 100 million monthly active users, as announced by Mark Zuckerberg a couple of months ago. When it hatched in July, Threads passed the 100 million user mark in just a few days, but its usage numbers soon collapsed. Still, Zuckerberg remains firmly convinced that Threads can become a billion-user social network.
