According to a recent Pew Research Center study, more than 15% of teenagers admit to using YouTube and TikTok “almost constantly.”
It is no secret that teenagers invest a good part of their time in social networks, from which it is sometimes difficult for them to look away. The 2.0 platforms that most attract the attention of young people are YouTube and TikTok. According to a recent study carried out in the United States by the Pew Research Center, more than 15% of adolescents admit to using both social networks “almost constantly.”
The 2.0 platform most widely used by teenagers on the other side of the pond is YouTube. 93% regularly use the Google video platform. And of that 93%, 16% say they visit or use YouTube almost constantly.
TikTok is, for its part, the second most popular social network among teenagers in the United States. 63% make regular use of the ByteDance social network. And 17% of those who regularly dive into the depths of TikTok use this social network practically incessantly.
YouTube and TikTok are followed in popularity among American teenagers by Snapchat (60%) and Instagram (59%).
Facebook and X (Twitter) lose a lot of traction among teenagers
On the contrary, Facebook and Twitter (now X) are not as popular among teenagers as they were a decade ago. Particularly conspicuous is the growing detachment that younger people feel towards Facebook, whose use among adolescents has plummeted from 71% in 2014-2015 to 33% today.
If we stop at X (formerly Twitter), 33% regularly used this social network in 2014-2015, while today only 20% regularly use this platform.
The popularity of Instagram among teenagers has been less at the expense of fluctuations over the last decade. In the period between 2014 and 2015, 52% of adolescents used Instagram, a proportion that rose to 62% in 2022 and fell again to 59% in 2023.
On the other hand, the Pew Research Center report infers that adolescent girls are more predisposed to use apps such as BeReal, TikTok, Snapchat and Facebook than boys. And boys, for their part, have a greater predisposition to use platforms with a focus on video games such as Discord and Twitch.
