In the realm of eCommerce, the significance of impeccable packaging cannot be overstated. Boxes, envelopes, wraps, and protective materials are pivotal elements that influence the success of online businesses. They serve as the initial physical point of contact with customers, offering a unique opportunity to establish a closer relationship and project a robust, trustworthy brand image.
Furthermore, these packages come in attractive, secure, or practical formats tailored to the specific needs of products, enhancing their safety throughout the logistics process. Crafting innovative packaging solutions is an integral part of every company’s operations, and the WorldStar Awards have emerged as the foremost global event in this field.
Designed to recognize those who have excelled in creating extraordinary, innovative, and sustainable packaging solutions, the WorldStar Awards set an international standard of excellence for others to emulate.
Spain Secures 8th Position in Worldstar Global Packaging Awards 2024
The 2024 edition celebrated 214 awarded packages from 38 countries (a slight decrease from the 228 of the previous year). Spain proudly secured eight accolades, showcasing advancements in packaging across beverage, food, personal care, and automotive sectors.
A notable mention goes to Smurfit Kappa, whose Spain headquarters received three awards, contributing to the multinational’s total of 12. Jesus Rivas, Business Development Innovation Manager for Smurfit Kappa Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, emphasized the recognition as a testament to their innovative prowess in sustainable packaging design.
Here are the Spanish winners and their innovative proposals:
1. Smurfit Kappa – TUPack (Category: Other) Smurfit Kappa takes a conservation approach with a single-piece, recyclable packaging solution for two-bottle boxes in eCommerce deliveries. This design accommodates bottles of various sizes (100 cl, 70 cl, 50 cl), ensuring product protection and stability during transportation. Apart from reducing carbon footprint, the packaging offers quick and easy assembly, simplifying the packaging process and reducing delivery times.
2. Smurfit Kappa – T9 e-Scooter Box (Category: Transit) Focusing on scooter packaging, Smurfit Kappa developed a compact and efficient solution. Manufactured from renewable raw materials and 100% recyclable, the design maintains a compact shape, not exceeding a maximum external length of 120 cm. This ensures it occupies minimal space during storage and shipping. Additionally, the packaging aids in assembling the scooter by disassembling the rear wheel and includes specialized protection for the Visual Control Unit (VCU) screen.
3. Smurfit Kappa – AgroLife (Category: Fresh Fruits and Vegetables) Targeting fresh produce prone to rapid deterioration due to ethylene exposure, AgroLife’s packaging absorbs the naturally emitted gas. This slows the ripening process, extending the shelf life by up to 50%. Consumers receive fresher products, contributing to a reduction in food waste.
4. Climesa – rPET VACSAC (Category: Packaging Materials and Components) This flexible container, made of rPET Rafia exterior and a Multilayer Barrier Film interior with a VACSAC valve, allows vacuum sealing for preserving fresh food. To reduce the packaging’s carbon footprint, Climesa replaced Virgin PP with rPET from recycled bottles.
5. International Paper – Twin Pizza Box (Category: eCommerce) Responding to a 2-for-1 pizza promotion, International Paper optimized the standard pizza box to accommodate two pizzas. Beyond resource and material savings, the Z-design allows consumers to use the same box for consumption.
6. Alzamora Group – Gernetic Case (Category: Health and Personal Care) Alzamora Group crafted an aesthetically pleasing packaging from a single piece of virgin cardboard from Stora Enso. The curved shapes highlight the client’s corporate identity, ensuring easy handling and minimal manipulation during folding.
7. DS Smith Tecnicarton – Corrugated Cardboard Packaging for Vehicle Chassis Protection (Category: Transit) This 100% recyclable corrugated cardboard packaging, with self-assembling cardboard positioners, safeguards vehicle chassis and parts during transportation to the client’s assembly line. This solution replaces metallic or EPS, EPP, and wood positioner packaging, resulting in environmental improvements, lighter packaging, and reduced costs.
8. Cartón Ondulado and PACKAGING Andaluces S.L.U – COPACK (Category: Other) COPACK is a recyclable corrugated cardboard packaging certified by FSC, designed for effortless paella transport. It replaces traditional aluminum and plastic sheets, providing customizable advertising surfaces. The packaging’s lid, placed over the paella, features two perforations for heat dissipation, maintaining an ideal temperature until consumption, and integrated side handles for safer transportation.
These Spanish innovations showcase the country’s prowess in packaging design, contributing to global advancements and sustainability goals. The WorldStar Global Packaging Awards continue to recognize and celebrate excellence, setting a benchmark for the packaging industry worldwide.
