Sharing messages, reading news, listening to music, shopping or talking with family and friends is easier than ever thanks to the apps found on our mobile devices, tools that have changed the way we communicate, get informed, and work. and we entertain ourselves. Apps like WhatsApp, YouTube or Facebook are among the most used.
In the digitalized world, apps are one of the main actors of change in our environment when it comes to sharing information, experiences or managing our daily lives. That is why Smartme Analytics has shared the results of a ranking of the apps most used by Spaniards during 2023.
The platform presents this ranking thanks to the continuous and real-time monitoring of the interaction of more than 13,000 users representative of the Spanish digital population with thousands of digital services.
The podium of the most used applications is led by WhatsApp, YouTube and Facebook. For its part, Amazon is the app that Spaniards use the most to make their purchases, followed by Aliexpress, Wallapop and Shein. For its part, Spotify is crowned the leader in entertainment applications, and CaixaBank and BBVA are the favorites in mobile banking.
Messaging and social media apps among the most used
In the words of Lola Chicón, CEO and founder of Smartme Analytics, “measuring the impact of apps allows companies to identify consumption models and behaviors, improve the digital experience and develop more efficient and personalized tools. Competition in the world of applications is strong and the search for digital and connected customer loyalty is increasingly important to find the differential gap that allows adding value to end users,” says the professional.
Messaging applications, social networks and e-commerce lead in the top positions given their widespread use among people. For example, WhatsApp is the most used app with 96.3% mobile penetration. As Smartme Analytics points out, despite the changes introduced by Meta and persistent doubts regarding privacy, Spaniards continue to choose it as their favorite to send messages. Its biggest competitor, Telegram, is in eighth place in the ranking with a penetration of 50.80% among users.
In second place, and with a penetration of 91.8%, is YouTube (91.8%) and the top 3 is closed by Facebook, with a penetration of 91.3%. In this way, both apps demonstrate strength against competitors such as Instagram (with 75.7%) and TikTok (with 54.3%), which are in fifth and sixth place respectively.
In fourth place among the most used apps is Gmail (85.3%) as the email application most used by Spanish users and around the world, as it has 1.8 million active users.
The applications that lead among online purchases
In 2022, electronic commerce in Spain will exceed 72 billion euros, 25% more than the previous year. In this shopping and retail segment, the most used app, and the undisputed leader, is Amazon, which has a penetration rate of 52.4%.
Aliexpress, for its part, has a mobile penetration percentage of 50.4%, while other apps such as Wallapop (37.9%) and Shein (35.4%) are also widely used by users.
In the case of more everyday purchases, supermarkets have also found a place in this ranking. Specifically, the Mi Carrefour and Lidl Plus applications obtain mobile penetration data of 26% and 24.7%, respectively, as the report highlights, this boost can be directly related to their discount strategies and exclusive promotions in the app .
Spotify: the most used app in the world of entertainment
In the case of applications from the world of entertainment, Spotify, the audio platform, is crowned as the leader in the market for streaming music apps and is also crowned as the entertainment app most used by Spaniards, thanks to a percentage penetration of 33.7%.
For its part, the consumption of series and movies streaming through apps is an increasingly deep-rooted habit among Spaniards. Netflix has a penetration of 23.5%) and Prime Video 16.5%. The increase in the production of quality own content and the acquisition of internationally recognized series and films for their respective catalogs are some of the main reasons that have led to this increase.
Banking apps also enter the ranking
Smartme Analytics highlights that in the economic section, Spaniards choose CaixaBank and BBVA as their most used trusted financial apps, with the former having a penetration percentage of 24.7% and 24.3% respectively.
