Guerrilla SEO benefits mainly those who have a relatively young website and therefore has little strength to position well with desired keywords or even, in some cases, all those who do not have a website. The concept is based on knowing how to take advantage of the power of third-party pages and specific events that create a higher search volume than usual.
Guerrilla SEO positioning related to events or news
Certain events or news stories create a higher search volume than usual. Until then, these keywords were not very relevant and, therefore, there is the possibility that there are relatively few contents indexed in search engines. When I refer to “little” we are talking about less than 1,000,000 indexed pages. For me, these are keywords that I consider “niche” in the sense that they are relatively easy to rank for.
To give you a concrete example, I show you what we have done with the keyword “OME Madrid”. OME Madrid is an online marketing fair and the most important event in our sector, where we will be present with a stand at the end of February. The volume of searches before and after the meeting will be higher than the rest of the year.
Logically, we want to get the most out of this event. To achieve this, we are interested in ensuring that as many visitors as possible know that Coguan is present and that it is worth stopping by our stand. If you do a Google search with “OME Madrid” you see that there are 230,000 indexed pages (this number may vary depending on how much time has passed since the publication of this post), which is a relatively low figure. Simply using the keyword in the title in a Coguan blog article helps us position the post as the first result not directly related to the event. We are noticing the effect every day because advertisers are already contacting us to see us and work with us.
Rank keywords through third-party sites
We do not dedicate much effort to SEO, although we should because we are wasting great potential. However, we always find ways to position ourselves with keywords even if not directly. If your own page is not able to position well even if you receive or even buy a high number of strong links, you have to take advantage of the strength that other pages have. How do we do it in practice? We frequently launch press releases and invest a lot of time and effort to appear on reference portals and blogs. Apart from appearing in these media, they help us position ourselves with keywords related to our business. With the term “Ad Exchange” there were weeks where we were represented with the company name in 3 of the first 10 links. It must be taken into account that we are competing with Google Doubleclick which represents the majority of the links.
All companies or freelancers who have difficulty getting published by the media can adapt a slightly different strategy: offer opinion articles that represent value-added content without obviously promoting the company. In this way, we are positioned in second position with an article of mine published in Noticias.com under “SME online advertising”. After several weeks, we also have our own article on the Coguan blog.
Position keywords through social networks
The third guerrilla positioning strategy is closely related to the second point: taking advantage of the popularity of third-party sites. In this case especially social networks. To do this, you can upload videos on YouTube where you can obtain three effects:
- Position videos on YouTube with the appropriate title in search engines
- Appear in the first results of the internal video search
- Offer high-quality content through videos to indirectly promote the company, product or character
- A very similar example is slideshare.net. In this case, it is not the video but the PowerPoint presentation that serves as a means of communication.
Social networks such as Facebook and Twitter also offer the creation of accounts that allow the selection of favorable keywords to position well. This fact has also had a negative effect because many people have taken advantage of the power of these sites to do “keyword spamming.” I recommend using these accounts with the appropriate keywords, giving correct use and providing value to other users of these networks. Otherwise it could have a very negative effect on the digital reputation of whoever is behind the account.
I haven’t adapted any of these strategies for this blog yet, so you won’t find me using the keyword “guerilla marketing.” Before positioning this blog I want to create a solid base of quality content so that the user also has something to read…
