The Threads app had been downloaded 2.6 million times in the Apple and Google app stores within three days of its European debut.
When Threads hatched last July in more than 100 different markets (except in countries belonging to the European Union), more than 15 million users joined a social network that Meta launched in just twelve hours. with the aim of replacing Twitter (now X). Five days after its debut, Threads already had 100 million users around the world. The Meta social network boasted at the time that it was the fastest growing app of all time. However, after that brilliant and phenomenal premiere, Threads’ popularity soon faded.
On December 14, Threads finally landed in Europe with the aim of taking flight and stealing from X users disenchanted with the future of Elon Musk’s social network. However, a week after its launch on European soil, the truth is that Threads has not attracted as much interest as it did when it was officially released last summer.
Europe’s interest in Threads is being rather cautious
According to figures compiled by the market research company data.ai, the Threads app had been downloaded 2.6 million times in the Apple and Google application stores three days after its debut on the old continent.
The European users who have most enthusiastically thrown themselves into the arms of Threads are the Italians, who account for more than one million of the 2.6 million downloads of the app in Europe.
It follows Italy in the Data.ai ranking Germany, where 550,000 downloads of the Threads app have taken place three days after the launch of the social network in Europe.
Third place on the list is occupied by France, where three days after the launch of Threads, 440,000 users in the neighboring country had already downloaded the Meta subsidiary’s application.
Fourth place in the Data.ai ranking goes to Spain, where 350,000 people had downloaded the Threads app three days after its launch in the European Union countries. Far behind our country and in fifth place is Poland, with 45,000 downloads in three days.
The remaining 200,000 downloads are distributed in the remaining 22 countries that are part of the European Union.
While waiting to know the real impact of Threads in Europe, X continues to lose steam around the world
The premiere of Threads last summer in another European country (in this case outside the European Union) enjoyed much greater popularity: the United Kingdom. There, 4.5 million users downloaded the Threads app just 72 hours after its launch on British soil.
Threads currently has 279 million downloads worldwide. However, the great interest that the social network aroused in its premiere last summer waned quickly. And just a month after its launch, Threads had lost most of its daily active users.
Market research companies estimated that the prolapse in the number of daily active Threads users had been 80%. And the social network’s engagement figures also fell abruptly just a few weeks after its premiere. However, the number of Threads downloads has remained more or less stable since last summer.
It is not clear whether or not Threads will be able to overshadow X, but the truth is that Elon Musk’s social network is not going through its most buoyant moment. According to Data.ai, the number of daily active users of this social network will plummet in 2024 to 250 million, 66 million less than in July 2022, when Twitter had 316 million daily active users.
